Dental Crowns and Bridges

Dental crowns and bridges are essential restorative treatments that aim to restore damaged, weakened, or missing teeth, providing both functional and aesthetic improvements to the smile.

Crowns, also known as caps, are tooth-shaped coverings that encase the entire visible portion of a damaged or decayed tooth above the gum line. They strengthen and protect the tooth while restoring its shape, size, and appearance. These crowns can be made from various materials, including metal-ceramic, all-ceramic, and zirconia, each with unique characteristics.

  • Metal-Ceramic Crowns: These crowns consist of a metal base, usually made of alloys like gold or nickel, covered with a layer of tooth-colored ceramic. They offer durability and strength due to the metal foundation and mimic the appearance of natural teeth with the ceramic outer layer. However, their metallic base may slightly affect aesthetics in certain cases.
  • All-Ceramic Crowns: Made entirely from ceramic materials like porcelain or lithium disilicate, these crowns provide excellent aesthetics. They blend seamlessly with natural teeth, mimicking their color, translucency, and texture. All-ceramic crowns are highly biocompatible and suitable for individuals with metal allergies. They are particularly popular for restoring front teeth due to their lifelike appearance.
  • Zirconia Crowns: Zirconia crowns are known for their exceptional strength and durability. Constructed from zirconium oxide, a robust ceramic material, these crowns are resistant to wear and fractures. They offer a natural look and are suitable for both front and back teeth. Zirconia crowns also exhibit compatibility with gum tissue, promoting healthy gum health around the restoration.

Dental bridges are prosthetic devices used to replace missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth (pontics) to adjacent natural teeth or implants. Similar to crowns, bridges can be made from various materials, including those mentioned above.

  • Materials for Bridges: Bridges can incorporate the same materials used for crowns. Metal-ceramic bridges offer strength and stability, while all-ceramic or zirconia bridges provide aesthetic advantages, blending seamlessly with the natural teeth.

Both crowns and bridges are custom-made to match the shape, size, and color of natural teeth, restoring functionality and enhancing the overall appearance of the smile. The choice of material for these restorations depends on factors such as location within the mouth, aesthetic preferences, and functional requirements, all of which is considered at Dr. Buttan’s Dental Care, when recommending the most suitable option for you.
